It's been awhile since the last J. Mayer album dropped, and to say I'm ancy for his next album (and subsequent promotion tour) is only a gross understatement. One of the many things I love about John Mayer is his involvement with social media. I follow him on twitter, and he's actually quite hilarious. One thing he's doing with this upcoming album is featuring the music-making process on his website via youtube videos. And it is awesome.
Not only do you get to see the inner workings of creating an album, which, I'll admit are a lot more challenging that I thought previously, but he isn't afraid to share to the beginnings of songs that may or may not be that good.
In the video I'm posting below he details one song he is working on called "Half of My Heart". Doesn't that title just scream John Mayer? The part he shows in the video doesn't give away much of the song, but it at least gives the viewer the sense of the melody. He also shows how he goes about "stacking" the song. I've seen this done a couple times now, most famously by Howie Day when I saw him years ago at the Showbox Seattle, but the way John Mayer does it really allows you to see the song transform before your very eyes. Okay enough me of me babbling... just watch!
Enjoy (hopefully)
