Prologue: Chris and I like live comedy. a lot. We used to go see comedians at Eastern when Student Life would bring them in. And while Student Life could never seem to get their act together and actually bring in good musical artists (case in point, they brought in David Banner this fall... wasn't his cumulative 2 hits big 4 years ago?), they always seemed to manage to bring in great comedians, go figure. So in addition to all the comedians we saw in college, we've always had the opportunity to see some great comedians back in Seattle- and even caught the Last Comic Standing Tour back in December.
And so this weekend...
Chris and I perused the comics coming to our favorite comedy spots in the Seattle area- but none of the comedians really seemed that great. Additionally, I'd already seen all the great movies that are out right now, and since both our families' had guests at our respective houses we were really at a loss on what to do. So, we headed out to Lincoln Square to see the movie "Taken". (Sidenote, while that movie was "ok", it was really truly ridiculous at times... like, even all the guys in the theater were dumbfounded at the ridiculous/non-realistic aspects of this movie; I'd recommend this one as a rental) The movie theater at Lincoln Square also shares a floor with a Bellevue "bar" called The Parlor. Generally, I don't really like this bar as its just so L-A-M-E. Either you are Asian, 30+ years old, or are desperately looking for someone to hook up with for the night. As I fit none of those labels, I tend to stick out like a sore thumb. But, as we passed the loud pounding music of this fine drinking establishment we saw an advertisement for Mark Curry who was playing at the Parlor's new "Comdedy Room" for the weekend. Now, to answer the 2 questions I know you are currently pondering:
1) Why didn't you see this advertisement when you were searching for Comedy that night in the first place? Because the Parlor is, as previously stated, lame and apparently all they need is a poster on the window of the place to advertise.
2) Who the heck is Mark Curry? Well my friends, its' Mr. Cooper, as in "Hanging with Mr. Cooper".
We had already missed the show for the Friday evening, so we got tickets for the following evening; and Saturday night found us standing outside the Comedy room in the Parlor waiting to be let inside to find seats. And Lo and Behold, who starts walking down the hallway to use the bathroom, Mr. Cooper! So he stopped to say hello to everyone, take pictures, and shake hands. I didn't have my camera so that was a bummer, but it probably would've been too awkward anyways. But the best part of this moment, was the fact that Mr. Cooper (Mark Curry just isn't as much fun to say) was drunk as heck! bahahahha. When he got on stage after the openers he looked even more drunk, and opened his show with, "So what are we going to talk about tonight?". hahaha- I instantly thought this was going to be a waste of $40! Most comedians will launch into their routines which they do on an almost nightly basis; works for me though- I'm only seeing them once and they are so funny! But Mr. Cooper really surprised me; he completely fed off the audiences choice of topics and winged the whole thing... and you know what, he was one of the funniest guys I've ever seen! I'm still having random moments at work where I will randomly crack up as I have a mental image of him telling one of his jokes running through my head!
In conclusion, maybe the drunkest comedians are actually the best comedians?
